Social media has taken the world by storm in recent years and it’s certainly impacted upon the law. When a court case is in progress it’s normal for people to be commenting on it, tweeting about it and building up publicity (without the help of the press). This means that jurors opinions could be biased if they were to take in this information, but it’s their job to only look at the facts. Twitter, in particular, is extremely popular for real-time chats, and unfortunately, it’s very difficult to stop people talking on social media platforms.
That said, some people have been charged when they’ve given out information on a case that they shouldn’t have and most people know they need to be careful if they’re close to the people involved in a court case. Let’s just say social media is great for many things, but it works negatively in law practice, especial in terms of influencing jurors.
